Jen Stark

Wow! I am amazed by the work of Jen Stark. Her paper sculptures are incredible and alluring. "Flipping" through the pages of her sketchbook made me want to sit down with mine (and I may do that later on). Her work is fantastic and I hope you check out her site. Enjoy!

{five hearts + five hates}

These are mine:

i heart:
1. the way my cat covers his eyes with his paws when he sleeps
2. older women who have beautiful silvery white hair and wear it in chic styles (the classic bob)
3. crepe myrtle and formosa trees in bloom
4. having a conversation with my sister that consists entirely of movie lines
5. watching other artists create something that make sense out of a blank canvas/paper

i hate:
1. people who seem to purposely not hold the door open for you
2. anyone who learned how to drive in Corpus Christi, tx
3. when people use excessive swearing in an attempt to "look cool"
4. listening to other people chew
5. almost all reality tv (I do like Project Runway and Top Design)

Feel free to share yours!

A Fabulous Day in Houston

It's a rare occasion that I get to experience true culture since I moved to Corpus Christi. Wednesday the art department at TAMUCC went on a trip to Houston to visit the MFA, the Rothko Chapel, and the galleries that surround it. The weather was gorgeous. The art was breathtaking and mesmerizing. The day was almost perfect (the only imperfection was the 4 hour drive on the charter bus). The visiting exhibit at the MFAH is the French Masterpieces (1800-1920) collection from the Met. I decided to take the headphones (I usually don't) and what greeted by a pleasant sounding french voice telling me tidbits about the famous works of Seurat, Courbet, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, and a slew of other french masters. Cypresses by Van Gogh was glorious. The raw emotions that practically bled from the painting were incredible. The brush strokes gave me chills. There is nothing like seeing a Van Gogh in person. I can say that at this point in my life (I'm only 24, I'm sure in sixty years I'll have a different answer). Oh! I didn't mention my beloved Matisse and the enigmatic Magritte! They were there too! I long for the day when, with diploma in hand (or in suitcase), I will return to a city of culture and style. I will cherish my years on the beach, but the big city lifestyle calls to me. Only 3 more semesters to go...

The facade of the Beck Building.

A photogenic squirrel outside the Cy Twombly gallery (the guard hand fed him peanuts).

This is the neon tunnel that connects the two buildings of the MFAH. On either side of the black walkway is a drop off! You can't tell that unless you look very closely when you're walking through there! (Sorry the pic is blurry...no flash).

Me on our last stop, tired from a long day of art ogling.

Boudoir by Hilary Robertson

This book by Hilary Robertson is one of my absolute favorite decorating/inspiration books. There are some rooms in there that I don't like at all, but most of them are gorgeous! I love to peruse the pages on a lazy saturday afternoon or right before I go to sleep at night.

You can find Boudoir by Hilary Robertson here.

p.s. The cover has changed since the book was published seven years ago. This cover is, in my opinion, more beautiful than the first. Although, I don't think the current cover image appears anywhere inside the book.
